Against every model, they analysed 10k vehicles for safety issues only to construct solid evidence that how many owners complain about the safety features on their cars. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration supported the research group to concrete the evidence.
The overall result of the research was relatively acceptable with an average of 26.8 complaints on every 10000 vehicles sold. According to the research, 8 out of 10 vehicles produced in the USA market or in the domestic market complained about issues and safety problems. Which are a massive surprise in itself and an alarming situation for the domestic automakers?
Another surprise in the research was found that in the list of least complained about cars, seven out of 10 vehicles are not domestic, they are imported from Asia and Europe. The overall situation of the domestic cars is worse than the bad and standards for those imported from across the globe are good enough. Here are the 10 most complained about cars listed.
10: Nissan Murano
38.5 complaints per 10,000 cars sold.
Nissan Murano crossover is one of the most popular crossovers in Nissan’s model line-up and it has a complaint rate of 38.5 out of a sample of 10,000 vehicles. Nissan aims to keep pushing the model in the heart and mind of the people and more importantly, the SUV is coming with a cadre of safety updates for the 2019 model year.
New updates include everything that was complained about in the research done by the group of the researchers.
Every aspect of the new model has been refined from mechanicals to refreshed body and an excellent safety package.
The model made its debut at LA Auto Show with a safety shield360. A new system that specially designed to combine the different safety features and systems to work even smoothly.
It combines the emergency braking system with the pedestrian detection system, blind spot monitoring system, rear cross traffic alert, and rear automatic braking system. The Safety Shield360 also combines lane departure system and automatic high beam system into the SL technology package. After this research on the vehicles, Nissan has decided to introduce the Safety Shield 360 on the lower trim models.
This would help the automaker to remain in the race of offering more safety features on the vehicles. The mechanical package involved a 3.5 litre V6 engine capable of generating 260hp and comes with a CVT transmission. It offers both front and all-wheel drive features.
No. 9 worst: Ford Fusion
42.4 complaints / 10,000
Ford Fusion is the next worst model which comes on the list. It looks strange that Ford has again decided to give a good refresh to the Fusion for its 2019 model year, as it is only two years when Ford has given the Fusion a facelift. However, the competition faced by the Fusion explains everything that why they need another refresh too early.
Rivals like Toyota and Honda launched their new generation models of Camry and Accord for 2019 and both of them are way ahead of the Fusion saloons. The co-pilot360 is a response from Ford to these automakers. Ford has recently confirmed its intentions about the Co-pilot360 package and now they have introduced it in the real world as well.
2019 Ford Fusion is the first ever model to come with Co-pilot360 technology which boasts world-class safety features at your figure tips. It has an emergency braking system, pedestrian detection system, lane keep assistance and blind spot system, also includes parking cameras and automatic high beam system. The other version of the automatic co-pilot360 system called co-pilot360 assist and it is the One introduced in titanium, hybrid, and sports models as standard.

No. 8 worst: Dodge Charger
48.1 complaints / 10,000
The 2019 Dodge Charger is one of the most spacious vehicles and there are few rivals who can actually get hold of it in real life. But unluckily the Charger has a relatively higher complaints rate which is on average 48.1 in every 10k vehicles. Why? Because it lacks in refinement and a substandard bottom half. In the past, it lacked in safety features as well which has pushed the charger up in the list of vehicles with worst compliant rates.
2019 Charger Safety Features
The 2019 Charger was improved with some extra safety features including an active parking system with rear view camera and sensors. Available with active safety features including adaptive cruise control system, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and apart from all it also offers rear cross traffic alert.
No. 7 worst: Ford Edge
49.2 complaints / 10,000
Another Ford in the range, it is the Edge SUV, a midsized vehicle has a complaint rate of 49.2 complaints on average. It has a spacious cabin and an excellent riding experience but the complaints are all about the safety features it was lacking in. Ford Edge fails to stand out among the rivals in the US markets due to its weak presentation of things. The 2018 Ford edge was ranked as
- #13 in Midsize SUVs
- #12 in two rows SUVs
- #21 in Crossover SUVs
All of these stats were not that good and inspiring for the automaker like Ford. But where it lacks behind in the class? It was definitely the safety features and build quality as NHTSA has crash-tested the vehicle a year ago and found a number of glitches. In 2019 model year safety features are good enough. But safety has been improved with Ford Co-Pilot360 suit.

Having a Prius on this list is a big surprise for us. The Prius has different kind of issues including exterior lighting issues, brake problems, and acceleration problems, most of them are of technical end things but when it comes to the automaker like Toyota, it becomes a bit more concerning.
Toyota recalled a number of vehicles on these issues and now in 2019 model year, Toyota Prius has improved a lot and they are sitting at the top of the list of modern electric cars. The 2018 Toyota Prius rankings are as follow;

Jeep was once one of the most reliable brands in the country but now the complaint rates have been increased to 60.9 complaints per 10k vehicles sold. Jeep produces the off-road vehicles and passed a lot of tough tests in the past. There are hardly one or two other companies that can do the same as wranglers, safety is something lacking and it should be improved.
No. 3 worst: Chrysler Town & Country
63.3 complaints / 10,000
Chrysler is famous for its upmarket vehicles but in the case of Town & Country SUV, they piled a massive amount of equipment and luxury touches with an aging body that is a real problem in this SUV. It suffers in tough crash tests and unable to beat the rivals. Safety features are a big issue and the vehicle scores really low in the crash tests.
No. 2 worst: Jeep Grand Cherokee
63.6 complaints / 10,000
The Cherokee hasn’t been a big smile for Jeep lovers since ages and its all because of the poor safety features and several recalls pushed the model down on the list.
