The pretty girl who in 1994 acted in the role of an orphan rescued by a professional killer in the famous action movie “Leon” directed by Luc Besson, has now grown up and earned her degree in psychology at Harvard.
After a few years off to devote herself to her studies, she came back into the movie world playing Queen Amidala in “Star Wars: Episode I”, continuing in the subsequent episodes of the George Lucas saga.
Her career is littered with success after success; most recently in 2010 her film “The Black Swan” was shown at the Venice film festival. With this role she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in the 2011.
Natalie Portman is a fierce supporter of animal rights and has been a vegetarian since childhood. In 2009, after reading the book “If nothing matters (eating animals)” by Jonathan Safran Foer, she has even become vegan: she doesn’t eat meat or any other animal products and their derivatives and she doesn’t wear clothes made of leather, feathers or fur. “All my shoes are produced by Target or Stella McCartney” that is to say completely animal-free.
When Dior wanted her support for one of his marketing campaigns, Natalie was unsure whether to accept or not.
The uncertainty arose – apparently – from the massive use of furs by the French fashion House. She finally agreed to a compromise: Dior has created shoes for Natalie with ecological materials and no animal component.
Being very attached to her home country of Israel, Natalie has been reported as saying that it is a priority for her to raise her children as Jewish but the ultimate thing is to be with someone who is a good person and who is a real partner.
Natalie had her first child, Aleph, by Benjamin Millepied, a dancer for the New York City Ballet. For three years she has been an ambassador of peace to the Finca (Foundation for International Community Assistance), and works closely with Queen Rania of Jordan offering economic aid to Third World women: the project is based on giving women the opportunity to start a business. When, during an interview she was asked who her role model is, Natalie said, “Yitzhak Rabin was my hero.”
In 2010, Natalie launched a site called “Making Of” with consultant Christine Aylward that allows you to see the behind the scenes at film productions, interviews with not only the actors and directors, but also all other figures needed to produce a film. This is an initiative that is really interesting for fans of the big screen and for those who want to know more about the world of cinema.
Natalie is often compared to Audrey Hepburn because of her innate elegance; her doe eyed expression and her demeanor. She is happy to be the girl next door rather than the celebrity which gives her a very grounded appearance.
On the red carpet she tends to choose designs by Christian Dior and Lanvin, two of her favorite brands. When not in the spot light Natalie enjoys a casual style of jeans and t-shirts.
